Pastor Charles’ Reflection:
Several years ago, Someone called me to remind me that 6-6-06 is the mark of the devil or the anti-Christ. I told them I had Jesus and it didn’t bother or concern me. I would rather think of 6-06 as the longest day of World War II when the allies invaded Normandy on the way to liberating Europe from the grip of the Third Reich or Hitler, or the day the Lord is going to use His children to glorify His name. But since the subject has surfaced, I remember a letter I read several years ago that was supposed to be from Lucifer. It goes like this:
“Dear Sunday School and Church Member, I visited your Sunday School and Church last Sunday and as I looked over those present, I was overjoyed to see so many had not attended. I become very anxious when I observe you participating in Bible Study and Worship. That’s why I have so many activities (including the computer, chat rooms, golf, fishing, softball, and the like) to keep you out on Sundays. Keep up the good works.
I heard some lessons and sermons not well prepared, so a lot of your allotted time was consumed in talking about ball games, business concerns and gossiping in the halls. Furthermore, many classes reported no contacts during the week, not even those who were absent last Sunday. It was wonderful! Keep up the lack of contacts. They will think you don’t care that they are absent.
Your placing emphasis on not reaching lost people makes my job easier. I am thinking about taking four weeks vacation next year instead of my usual two, and I may even sleep in on Sundays because after all it is the only day I have to rest.
Also, I’ve noticed that the loneliest place in town on visitation night is the church. I am really concerned about the six or seven who do show up, they are hurting my reputation. I always sweat this day because when you do go out and tell someone about Jesus, they might get saved. But your Sunday School members and church members are so easily turned away by a lot of unimportant-events I have planned for you on that day. I have also observed that it is more comfortable for you to stay at home than to go out and visit, and besides, you have earned a little R&R - because I always make that your busiest day of the week.
Well, I wanted to drop you this letter and encourage you to keep up the mediocrity. No sense in you getting all worked-up about this Gospel stuff any way. Why people may begin to think you are a fanatic. I am always here to assist you and if anyone in putting pressure on you to become more involved in the Great Commission, just let me know. I have a pit full of excuses.
By the way, I understand that your pastor is preaching on “Commitment to Fish” and I am sure he will lay it on heavy for you to launch out into the deep and let your nets down to catch more fish for Jesus, to take Jesus at His Word now and don’t wait, and I am sure he will tell you to recognize your need for Christ always. Well, you know what to do - keep sleeping and stay away from his sermon.
Hope to see you soon, Lucifer”
I am grateful to God for members who are committed and working for the Lord Jesus Christ. The only requirement of any member is to be found faithful in the small and large things of the Kingdom. But when you think about it, there are no small things in the Kingdom, for everything we do for His glory is huge. Keep on keeping on and we will get her done, for His glory. See the faithful this Sunday if Jesus tarries.
In His Grip, Pastor Charles
ATTENTION VOLUNTEERS FOR NEW BUILDING FOOD COMMITTEE—Everyone helping with the New Building Food Committee is asked to meet at the church on Monday, June 28th at 10:00 to discuss and appoint various tasks and/or duties that will need to be done the week of July 11th.
In an effort to ensure the safety of our children, the deacon council in conjunction with the children's committee has updated our nursery policy and created a children's church policy. Copies of the policies are available for review or you may e-mail me at ddaniels@rock-hill.kk12.sc.us for a copy. We will vote on these two policies at our next quarterly conference on July 21st. If you have any questions concerning these policies please let us know. Thank you Donna Daniels.
DATE CHANGE - Our July 5th deacon's meeting has been changed to June 28th at 7:00 directly following our interview with Shannon Parrish
PLEASE CONTINUE DONATING—TIME IS DRAWING NEAR. From The Food Committee for our building project. As you are aware, we are responsible for feeding the 250 volunteers coming in to build our new facility for eight days and a group of 50 who will arrive early for three days. Many of you will be asked to donate your time during July 8-17 to help us prepare these meals. If you are available, please contact Linda Tanner (817-1818), Bill Gordon or Ann Gordon (329-2657), the Food Committee for this project.
The items we would like you to donate are as follows: 8 oz. Styrofoam cups, Divided Plates, Salt, Pepper, Napkins, gallon cans of Chocolate Pudding, gallon cans of Peaches and Pears. Other items will be needed later. If you are unable to shop yourself, please feel free to donate money to the Food Fund.
Please let Linda Tanner know of any donations being brought so she can inventory them and keep you posted on our need list. If you have questions concerning donations, please call her at 817-1818.
Sunday, July 11th will kick off our week of construction, evangelism, sports camp and welcoming our volunteers. NOW! We will have around 200 volunteers, plus our Sunday normal crowd to feed. We need to cook enough for our family AND fifteen or twenty more. Please go overboard for this Sunday and lets have enough food for everyone. The Social/Kitchen Committee is coordinating this event and we thank them for their work.
“Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow”
The vote to approve the purchase of the carpet and pews for the sanctuary renovation was 99% in favor of the recommendation of the New Facility Committee. We thank you and praise God for this phase in our plans for the sanctuary. Now, let me tell you how you can help to purchase a pew. We have two different sized pews. According to Travis Jackson’s figures, a six foot pew will cost $500.00. We need 24 six foot pews. A nine foot pew will cost $750.00. We need 30 nine foot pews. The cost includes a brass plate with the donor’s name and the name of the person to be honored or memorialized. Please put a check in an envelope and mark clearly that it is for a pew, giving size and amount included. Thank you for your help.
FOOD FOR THOUGHT ON THE CHURCH
“Some go to church to see and be seen, Some go there to say they have been, Some go there to sleep and nod, But few go there to worship God” - Unknown Quote
“The Church knew what the psalmist knew: Music praises God. Music is well or better able to praise him than the building of the church and all its decoration; it is the Church's greatest ornament.” Igor Stravinsky
“Church isn’t where you meet. Church isn’t a building. Church is what you do. Church is who you are. Church is the human outworking of the person of Jesus Christ. Let’s not go to Church, let’s be the Church.” Bridget Willard
Summer Video Series Begins June 27th at 5pm
We will begin our summer video series on Sunday, June 27th at 5 pm. This 3 month series is designed to help us understand the differences between our beliefs and those of other religions in our community. All church members (young and old) are encouraged to attend. We will begin our video series with “The Mormon Puzzle”. This 90 minute video contrasts their beliefs with ours and equips us to serve as better witnesses to the Mormon population. We all know someone who may practice the Mormon faith. On the 4th Sundays of July and August, we will study the beliefs of the Jehovah Witnesses and the Muslims. We need to equip ourselves to better represent our beliefs when we get that knock at our door. Would it not be grand if we could be sure enough of our beliefs to be the ones going out doing the knocking? Please come learn about these faiths in order to better share your faith with others.
Youth Weekend Retreat - The youth will have a summer retreat in Maggie Valley, NC the weekend of Friday, July 30 through Sunday, August 1. The cost will be $20 per participant and is due to the Trotters by July 15th. Potential activities include going to Ghost Town or a water park, putt-putt, trout fishing, shopping in Cherokee, and go-cart racing. A youth / youth parents meeting will be held closer to the retreat date to get the details regarding departure time, what to pack, activity list and accommodation info. We will have evening Bible study and church on Sunday so your Bible is a must pack. As a prerequisite, all youth wishing to attend the retreat are expected to assist with NewKirk’s building project July 11th -17th You can work at the sports camp, go out with the evangelism team, work construction, construction cleanup, or deliver snacks and drinks to the builders. There is a task for you.
We will purge our Prayer List soon, so be looking at those you wish to remain on the list and let us know of your desire.
We will be interviewing Shannon Parrish for our potential youth minister on June 28th at 6:30. Youth council, youth, and parents of youth are invited to attend. Please be in prayer as we search for our youth minister. God is truly blessing Newkirk.
Thank you Donna Daniels
