Pastor Charles’ Reflection:
Dr. Hugh Pratt, of Sebring, Ohio sent the following article to me with a nice gift to our building fund. Linda and I visited him on our way to perform the marriage for Trent and Kallie. We met him at the Billy Graham Cove 10-12 years ago. Football season is fast approaching, so I thought it would be appropriate.
Church Football:
Quarterback Sneak - Church members quietly leaving during the invitation.
Draw Play - What many children do with the bulletin during worship.
Halftime - The period between Sunday School and worship when many choose to leave.
Bench-warmer - Those who not sing, work, pray, or apparently do anything but sit.
Backfield-in-motion - Making a trip to the back for restroom, water during the service.
Staying in the pocket - What happens to a lot of money that should be given to the Lord’s work.
Two-minute Warning - The point at which you realize the sermon is almost over and began to gather up your children, and belongings.
Instant Replay - The preacher loses his notes and falls back on last week’s illustrations.
Sudden Death - What happens to the attention span of the congregation if the preacher goes “overtime.”
Trap - You’re called to pray and are asleep, or not paying attention.
End Run - Getting out of church quickly, without speaking to any guest or fellow member.
Flex Defense - The ability to allow absolutely nothing said during the sermon to affect your life.
Halfback Option - The decision of 50% of the congregation not to return for the evening service or prayer meeting on Wednesday.
Blitz - The rush for the restaurants following the benediction to beat the Methodist, Presbyterians and other Baptists to eat. Forget about beating those who don’t attend the services, they are there at 11:30.
Hope you enjoyed and maybe even given some thought to the church football terminology. Selah! See you Sunday, if we don’t see Jesus coming in the Eastern skies as King of King and Lord of Lords.
In His Grip, Pastor Charles

THE KNOTS PRAYER.
Dear God: Please untie the knots that are in my mind ,my heart my life. Remove the have nots, the can nots and the do nots that I have in my mind. Erase all the will nots, might nots that may find a home in my heart. Release me from the could nots, would nots that obstruct my life. And most of all Dear God; I ask that you remove from my mind, my heart and my life, all the “am nots”
that I have allowed to hold me back, especially the thought, that I am not good enough
Author Known to God .
You and I must not complain if our plans break down if we have done our part. That probably means that the plans of One who knows more than we do have succeeded. —Edward E. Hale
Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching. —Thomas Jefferson
He who prays for his neighbors, will be heard for himself. —The Talmud
A pastor noticed a small boy trying to ring a door bell, but he could not reach it. Wanting to be of help, the cleric walked up to the child and asked him if he wanted help in ringing the doorbell. “Yes,” said the lad. The pastor put his finger on the bell, looked down and said, “And now what, my little man?” “Now,” said the boy while scampering off the porch, “we run!”
We probably never give it a thought but when you consider seriously the nursery rhymes taught to children, one might discover a bit of wisdom.
Recall this old rhyme written by an Englishman?
There was a crooked man, and he went a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile; He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse, And they all lived together in a little crooked house.
What is the moral of the rhyme? Is it not that if one starts out crooked, everything becomes crooked? Life never seems to get straightened out. The rhyme does not have the crooked man living happily ever afterward.
That is why the Bible offers great wisdom regarding helping children to get started right. It says, “Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray” (Proverbs 22:6). One might add that if they ever do, they’ll have to deal with an uneasy conscience.
Church-wide Mission Project
God poured out a tremendous blessing to us last week and He continues to bless us as we build for His glory. I firmly believe that as we continue to praise and honor Him, His blessings will continue to rain down from above. NewKirk is not a church in a vacuum and we should not just focus on our needs/wants. God commands us to serve others and to love our neighbors as ourselves; therefore, we are asking all members and regular guests to join us as we collect school supplies for the less fortunate in our community. Our teachers see kids arrive at school without necessary items. We can help. If we each purchase $5 of school supplies, we can make a big impact at Old Pointe Elementary (school where NewKirk is zoned). A collection box will be located in the back hallway. Our children and youth will be shopping for school supplies on Wednesday, August 11th
